Hello everyone,

SEDS is planning on joining an Astronomy Club star party this Friday, October 23rd. The plan is to meet at Which-Wich on University at 4 pm to eat beforehand. If you can't make it to dinner, you should plan to meet up with everyone at 5pm in the Steward Observatory/ Sonett parking lot by the SEDS office. They will be heading up to Windy Point near Mt. Lemmon, so please keep in mind that it will likely be VERY cold, so dress appropriately. If you are interested in attending, please email Kevin at kevinkhu@email.arizona.edu .

If you cannot tell already, this conference is a huge undertaking that cannot possibly be successful without your help. Based on my estimate, we will need about 100 hours of volunteer time from local SEDS members like you.

If you are a dues paying member, for 4 hours of volunteering, you will receive free conference registration ($15 value) as well as a free conference T-shirt ($10 value). In you are not a dues paying member, but still a student, for 6 hours of volunteering, you will receive free conference registration ($25 value) as well as a free conference T-shirt ($10 value). This spreadsheet contains every conceivable volunteer opportunity for our conference. If you would like to volunteer for SpaceVision 2009, please do the following:

Read over this spreadsheet until you understand it (hopefully it is clear). The yellow tinted rows are a higher priority over the white rows, so please focus on those first. I have listed the conference activities you would be missing by volunteering at a certain time so you can make sure not to miss talks/ events that interest you most.
Find a combination of 4-6 hours (or more!) that you are able to volunteer.
Reply to this email with a list of reference numbers (the first column - "Ref #") corresponding to the times you would like to volunteer. For example, if you would like to help assemble conference bags and take the first shift for conference registration on Thursday, you would give me reference numbers 1 & 6. In your email, please also make sure to include your full name and cell phone number.
Once you email me this info, I will respond as soon as possible letting you know that I added you to the spreadsheet. Please check to make sure that I added you correctly, and email me if a change needs to be made.

Spots will be filled on a "first-come-first serve" basis. As a volunteer, you will be required to attend one volunteer orientation. I will be holding at least two different orientations the week of SpaceVision to accommodate everyone's schedule (I'll send exact times for these next week).

One thing I ask is that you read EVERY future email I send to you with [SPACEVISION] in the subject line, as it will contain very important information specific to your volunteering..

We will be having our next general meeting this Monday, October 5th at 4 pm in Kuiper 312. At this meeting, you can order/ pay for a UASEDS shirt. I will plan to order them Wednesday of next week, and they should arrive about 2 weeks later. Once again, we ask that your pay for the shirt ($10) before we order them so we do not have an excess amount of shirts. We will be discussing a few more details about the Kitt Peak trip planned for Saturday, October 10th at the meeting as well, so try and attend if you can. Also, I will likely be giving a presentation on my research experiences this summer at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the James Webb Space Telescope (the topics are related!). I hope to see you there!

As you may (or may not) know, SpaceVision 2009 is the SEDS national conference that we here at the U of A are planning for mid November. Important Meeting Updates

- - - HOV Training, Needed for SpaceVision - - -
We are still needing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) drivers for our national conference. HOVs will be used to transport conference attendees to a few trips to Pima Air and Space Museum, Titan Missile Museum, and Kitt Peak National Observatory on Thursday, November 12, 2009. The U of A offers free training courses which can be found here: http://risk.arizona.edu/training/index.shtml#HOV . To summarize, there are three training sessions left before our conference:

* Monday, October 5, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in USA room A104
* Wednesday, October 21, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in USA room A104
* Tuesday, November 3, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in USA room A104

NOTE: The USA Building is located about 2 miles west of campus! After the training session, you are required to spend 30 minutes on a Friday for a "Driving Test." If you are interested in signing up, you can sign up through Sara Thomas form at sthomas@email.arizona.edu . Please let me know if you are planning on taking the course.

- - - UASEDS Kitt Peak National Observatory Trip - - -
On Saturday, October 10th, UASEDS will be taking a trip to Kitt Peak National Observatory. We will plan to meet in the SEDS Office at 10 am, leaving shortly after. We will have a picnic lunch on the top of the mountain (bring your own lunch - chips, cookies, and drinks will be provided by SEDS). We will hopefully be receiving a special tour of the 90" telescope. This trip will be free for all dues paying members and cost $5 for non-dues paying members. I expect that we will be back by 4 pm. If you drive your own vehicle, you will be reimbursed for gas money. If you have not already let either Kevin or me know, please send me an email if you plan to attend, letting me know if you can drive.

- - - Flandrau Science Center Volunteering - - -
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for Flandrau Science Center, please let me know. We are going to try and arrange a large SEDS-member training. Several UASEDS members are already regular volunteers, operating the observatory telescope and helping out at special events. Although the planetarium is closed, there are still several different opportunities for volunteers (Read: http://www.gotuasciencecenter.org/contact/volunteering/volunteer-opportunities/ ). We will be re-ordering UASEDS T-shirts for members. The shirts are black with the red, white, and blue UASEDS logo on the front with "Students for the Exploration and Development of Space" spelled out underneath. If you are interested in purchasing a shirt, please email me and let me know what size you will need. We are charging $10 for each shirt (which is pretty much at-cost). We will order the shirts next Wednesday, October 7th and you must pay before we place the order.

If you are not sure of what size to order, we will bring various sizes to the next general meeting.

UASEDS would like to encourage members to take HOV training with the school before Nov 12th, if they can

The Biosphere 2 trip will take place this Saturday, Sept 25, at 8 am and will be returning around 2 pm
Dues paying members need to pay $10 for the trip.
Pye Pye gave a presentation about altering images to make them 3D, using the Apollo images as her examples
Kevin gave a presentation about how HIRISE does their 3D imaging
If any members would like to give out presentations at meetings, they would need to talk to Kyle about scheduling it in.

National Update: UA Ham Radio

Why this matters to any of you?
UA Ham Radio Club helped out UA SEDS back in the day of SEDS SAT.

Now, UA SEDS is undertaking another major project. We are building a rockoon. For more information on the rockoon team go to: http://wiki.seds.org/index.php/Rockoon_Project
For the communications part of the project ham radio will be necessary.

It was sent out in the executive board email that "UofA SEDS has been building a relationship with them once again." This would be refering to the members of the rockoon project who have gone to meetings for more information. Also, Chris Walker, the faculty advisor for their club, has let the rockoon group use equipment from a radio repeater senior design project (most of the members of that project were UA members by the way).

The UA Ham Radio Club meets the first and third Wednesday of every month at 6pm in room 303 of the Old Engineering Building. The next meeting should be on 9/16.

Here are the important parts to our election:

If you are not planning on voting in the election, you can still ask questions at the Q&A session during the meeting. If you are not planning on paying dues/ voting in the election, you can skip down to the next section in the email titled "General Meeting Reminder."

Here is some important information about the election for those interested:

The following candidates are running for UASEDS National Representative (in alphabetical order by last name):

* Keri Hancock

National Representatives work to help keep the national and local levels of SEDS connected. My name is Keri Hancock. I serve as an executive board member for SEDS-USA, participating in SEDS on the national level. Because of my position I attend all national level board meetings. I get the word from the source and must admit that I do already keep UA SEDS in the forefront of my mind during those meetings. In addition to being able to argue for UA SEDS at a higher level than most can reach I also have the benefit of being able to hear the information that hasn't been officially released. Because I work with the board members together on projects I know what is going on before we do an official release of information. This means that I can help to keep UA SEDS pointed in the direction of SEDS-USA more accurately than any other. I also have previous experience attending the Council of Chapter meetings as exec board rep or as a presenter. Attending the council of chapters, or CoC, is one of the main responsibilities of the national rep, a responsibility that I am already familiar with. Since I am already broken into the usual responsibilities, and even adjusted to those extra ones that set me above, I can immediately begin to work the position even harder. I will be posting regular updates to the website. The Exec board already requests that we send in our weekly updates and now that the school year has started and my updates have as well, it will be no problem typing up one more at the same time so that UA SEDS members, and all those interested in SEDS can see what is going on with the organization. I will also be sure that UA SEDS receives its fair share of NOVAs, our SEDS newsletter, and any other publications. Please vote for me. You would clearly be making the better choice. I apologize if I am not in the meeting in person today. Monday the 14th I'll be having a long lab class as the one the week previous was canceled due to the holiday. After talking to the T.A. I'm hoping that in the future lab will not be a problem for my SEDS attendance.

I will keep the SEDS website neat and up to date and promise to maintain the forums even if constant trolling is required. I am Cisco A+ trained; a leading industry standard for the maintenance of PC machines. So you can all rest assured that the computers and hardware in the SEDS office will work to their full capabilities. And, I will make sure that if the hardware and software in the SEDS office does not meet the demands of the SEDS club then, proper hardware and software will be found and procured as long as it is reasonably obtainable.

The election will be formatted as follows:

* 1-2 minute introduction from each candidate
* 10 minute question & answer session for each position
* Anonymous vote!

Please let me know if you have any questions. Dues can be paid at the beginning of tomorrow's meeting if necessary. If you are running for a position and have yet to pay dues, your dues must be paid before the election occurs.

- - - Rockooon Project Meeting - - -
There will be a Rockoon Project meeting immediately following the SEDS general meeting on Monday, September 14th. As a large scale project, people of all backgrounds are encouraged to participate. The final goal is to launch a rocket off of a balloon based platform approximately this time next year. If you are interested or have any questions please try to attend tomorrow or contact Matthew Goodman at mgoodman at email.arizona.edu .

On Monday, September 14th, the College of Engineering will be holding a club fair in the Aerospace & Mechanical Engineering building courtyard (corner of Speedway and Mountain). General Meeting - Sept 14, 4 pm, Kuiper 312; Election reminder; Star Party/ Potluck reminder

Our next general meeting will be held on Monday, September 14th, at 4:00 pm in the Kuiper Space Sciences building, Room 312. The Space Sciences building is located just east of Flandrau Science Center near the intersection of University Blvd. and Cherry Ave. (map: http://iiewww.ccit.arizona.edu/uamap/staticLarge/92.html ). If you enter through the main doors facing the mall, go up the stairs/ elevator to the third floor and follow the signs. FYI, I expect this building and room to be the location of all future SEDS meetings this semester.

At this meeting, we will be holding our election for National Representative and Technology Officer. If you are interested in running for one of these positions and have yet to let me know, you have until Friday, September 11th (today!) at 5 pm to email me. If you have already notified me that you plan to run, your platform must also be sent to me by Friday evening (remember, this is optional).

This Saturday, I will then send an email giving a list of the candidates as well as their individual platforms. I will accept votes via email from individuals who are unable to make the general meeting. As a reminder, only dues paying members may run for an officer position or vote in this election. Dues can be paid before the election at Monday's meeting ($10 per semester, $20 for the year).

As a reminder, SEDS and Astronomy Club will be having a joint Star Party at Catalina State Park on Friday, September 11th (today!). Plan to meet in the parking lot between Steward Observatory and the Sonett building at 5 pm. Please email me if you plan to attend, let me know what you plan to bring for the potluck (food, $3.00, or otherwise), and let me know if you can drive other people.

UASEDS will be having a joint Star Party with Astronomy Club this Friday, September 11th. We will plan on meeting in the parking lot between Steward Observatory and the Sonett building at 5 pm sharp. It will be a potluck, so please bring potluck-like items (see below for a complete list of items already being brought). If you are unable to bring items, please plan on bringing $3 to help purchase other food. We will be driving to Catalina State Park (about 15 miles north of campus) for the Star Party. If you are able to drive and can take other people, please let me know.

We will be bringing the UASEDS telescope, several telescopes from Steward Observatory, and a few personal scopes. If you plan to attend, please email me, letting me know what you plan to bring, if you can drive people, and how many people will be coming with you (potluck-contributing friends are welcome!).

The following items are already being brought:
Soda and Water
Fruit Salad
Condiments
Napkins and Apples
Chips
Cups and Paper Plates and Couscous
Burgers and Buns and Cheese
Hot Dogs and Buns
Oreos

I am sure since we will have a few dozen people attending, we can afford to have multiples of the items listed above. We still need items such as charcoal, lighter fluid, and s'mores...

On a different note - As a reminder, you can still declare your intent to run for Technology Officer or National Rep until this Friday at 5 pm (email me with your intent, questions, etc.).

I will send out an email later this week with details about the next general meeting.

Hello everyone!

As a reminder, we will be having our first meeting of the semester today, Monday, August 31st at 4 pm. Plan to meet in the Steward Observatory Lobby located on the main floor in the center of the building. FREE PIZZA will be served at this time. After the pizza disappears, we will migrate to the large lecture hall (N210) for the actual meeting. At the meeting, we will be going over planned events and projects for the school year including trips (local and otherwise), outreach opportunities using our 18" Dobsonian telescope, engineering projects, and SpaceVision 2009 (the SEDS National Conference being held here, hosted by us, in November).

Students of all levels of education and majors are welcome to attend! Friends are also welcome, so bring them along too!

-first meeting will be on the second Monday of the school year at 4 pm.
-club dues: $20 for both semesters; $10 for each
-mouthly star parties
-big trips: California, Utah, Colorado
-small trips: Raytheon, MMT, LBT, Kitt Peak, Skycenter
-announce the open officer positions at the first meeting
-clean the office before school starts
-contact someone from the Rockoccon team to see what they did to the office
-write up the telescope manual
-hand out sign-up sheets for T-shirts
-have dues paying members write their information on membership forms and Space Grant forms
-Fall Club Fair: the first Thursday from 10 am to 2 pm
-plan for trips to the IMAX in Phoenix for space-themed movies

There is going to be a conference in San Jose, CA July 17-20 called NewSpace. Some of the UASEDS members are volunteering for the conference. There will be a UASEDS Game Night on May 6th and it will start at 6pm

There will be 17 people going on the LBT trip
UASEDS will be renting an HOV and van
UASEDS memebers can get their club T-shirts at the meeting
UASEDS will pay for the entrance fee for the ISDC (5 yes, 0 no, 1 netural
UASEDS will be selling shotglasses at the ISDC
Mike will update the UASEDS computers with their needed programs
Only three people are running for the UASEDS elections
Mike will send out another email to the members
There will be pizza at the election meeting
There will be a UASEDS Game Night on Wednesday May 6
Current UASEDS officers that are not going to be in their positions next semester need to write up a report on their position
