At the beginning of the meeting, all UASEDS members and officers introduced themselves to each other
The possible short UASEDS trips are Titan Missile Museum, PIMA Air and Space Museum, Large Binocular Telescope, Raytheon, Kartchner Caverns, a camping night with the telescope, and Colossal Caves
UASEDS members also have the opportunity to have observing runs at a few of the telescopes around Tucson
UASEDS members that are interested in these observing runs must submit a proposal

The UASEDS big trip for the semester is a road trip around California, hitting sites like Vanden Air Force Base, Edward Air Force Base, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA Ames Research Center, SpaceX, Scaled Composites, Masten Space Systems, Palomar Observatory, San Jose Tech Museum, and other sites around the San Francisco area

We will be leaving on Saturday, March 13, returning on either Wed or Thursday
The Ca trip will be a mixture of camping and hotel
The special Treasurer election will take place next meeting, Monday Feb 1

There is a Club Fair tomorrow that UASEDS will be at from 9:30 am to 2pm
Pye Pye isn't the Treasurer so Kyle will announce the special elections for that position

The UASEDS Snack Stores need to have someone that will be able to maintain them throughout the semester

Nova Articles Request

Dave Holewka, Director of Publications for SEDS-USA is putting together the next NOVA and wished for the University of Arizona to submit a few articles. The four articles he wants are listed below.

1) Can you write an article reflecting on SpaceVision 2009? I
understand that you may be writing a letter to the corporate sponsors of
SV09 already. A modified version of that would be perfect.

2) I heard nothing but the highest praise for the UA Astronomy program.
It seems like you guys down there are very well equipped in that field. Can
someone from UA SEDS write an article for the NOVA on something in
astronomy? It can be about anything that has to do with astronomy. I know
a lot of interesting news is springing up lately. Can be between half of a
page to a page in length.

3) I hear that at SpaceVision, the State of SEDS wasn't done. I'd like
to include it into this NOVA edition. Can someone write that in an article?

4) Finally, my last request is that someone from UA SEDS writes an
article about how your chapter has reached out to other majors and recruited
them

The article freeze date is December 20th, so please have the articles done
by then.

SEDS is planning on joining an Astronomy Club star party this Friday, October 23rd. The plan is to meet at Which-Wich on University at 4 pm to eat beforehand. If you can't make it to dinner, you should plan to meet up with everyone at 5pm in the Steward Observatory/ Sonett parking lot by the SEDS office. They will be heading up to Windy Point near Mt. If you cannot tell already, this conference is a huge undertaking that cannot possibly be successful without your help. Based on my estimate, we will need about 100 hours of volunteer time from local SEDS members like you.

If you are a dues paying member, for 4 hours of volunteering, you will receive free conference registration ($15 value) as well as a free conference T-shirt ($10 value). In you are not a dues paying member, but still a student, for 6 hours of volunteering, you will receive free conference registration ($25 value) as well as a free conference T-shirt ($10 value). This spreadsheet contains every conceivable volunteer opportunity for our conference. If you would like to volunteer for SpaceVision 2009, please do the following:

Read over this spreadsheet until you understand it (hopefully it is clear). The yellow tinted rows are a higher priority over the white rows, so please focus on those first. I have listed the conference activities you would be missing by volunteering at a certain time so you can make sure not to miss talks/ events that interest you most.
Find a combination of 4-6 hours (or more!) that you are able to volunteer.
Reply to this email with a list of reference numbers (the first column - "Ref #") corresponding to the times you would like to volunteer. For example, if you would like to help assemble conference bags and take the first shift for conference registration on Thursday, you would give me reference numbers 1 & 6. In your email, please also make sure to include your full name and cell phone number.
Once you email me this info, I will respond as soon as possible letting you know that I added you to the spreadsheet. Please check to make sure that I added you correctly, and email me if a change needs to be made.

Spots will be filled on a "first-come-first serve" basis. As a volunteer, you will be required to attend one volunteer orientation. I will be holding at least two different orientations the week of SpaceVision to accommodate everyone's schedule (I'll send exact times for these next week).

One thing I ask is that you read EVERY future email I send to you with [SPACEVISION] in the subject line, as it will contain very important information specific to your volunteering..

We will be having our next general meeting this Monday, October 5th at 4 pm in Kuiper 312. At this meeting, you can order/ pay for a UASEDS shirt. I will plan to order them Wednesday of next week, and they should arrive about 2 weeks later. Once again, we ask that your pay for the shirt ($10) before we order them so we do not have an excess amount of shirts. We will be discussing a few more details about the Kitt Peak trip planned for Saturday, October 10th at the meeting as well, so try and attend if you can. Also, I will likely be giving a presentation on my research experiences this summer at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the James Webb Space Telescope (the topics are related!). I hope to see you there!

As you may (or may not) know, SpaceVision 2009 is the SEDS national conference that we here at the U of A are planning for mid November. We are expecting about 100 SEDS students from chapters all across the nation to attend, which brings me to the following quesion: Do you have any extra floor space/ beds that you would be willing to let other SEDS students use for the duration of the conference? In an effort to lessen the cost of attendance for SEDS conference attendees, I am reaching out to you all the see if you have any extra room to spare. Important Meeting Updates

- - - HOV Training, Needed for SpaceVision - - -
We are still needing High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) drivers for our national conference. HOVs will be used to transport conference attendees to a few trips to Pima Air and Space Museum, Titan Missile Museum, and Kitt Peak National Observatory on Thursday, November 12, 2009. The U of A offers free training courses which can be found here: http://risk.arizona.edu/training/index.shtml#HOV . To summarize, there are three training sessions left before our conference:

* Monday, October 5, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in USA room A104
* Wednesday, October 21, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in USA room A104
* Tuesday, November 3, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in USA room A104

NOTE: The USA Building is located about 2 miles west of campus! After the training session, you are required to spend 30 minutes on a Friday for a "Driving Test." If you are interested in signing up, you can sign up through Sara Thomas form at sthomas@email.arizona.edu . Please let me know if you are planning on taking the course.

- - - UASEDS Kitt Peak National Observatory Trip - - -
On Saturday, October 10th, UASEDS will be taking a trip to Kitt Peak National Observatory. We will plan to meet in the SEDS Office at 10 am, leaving shortly after. We will have a picnic lunch on the top of the mountain (bring your own lunch - chips, cookies, and drinks will be provided by SEDS). We will hopefully be receiving a special tour of the 90" telescope. This trip will be free for all dues paying members and cost $5 for non-dues paying members. I expect that we will be back by 4 pm. If you drive your own vehicle, you will be reimbursed for gas money. If you have not already let either Kevin or me know, please send me an email if you plan to attend, letting me know if you can drive.

- - - Flandrau Science Center Volunteering - - -
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for Flandrau Science Center, please let me know. We are going to try and arrange a large SEDS-member training. Several UASEDS members are already regular volunteers, operating the observatory telescope and helping out at special events. Although the planetarium is closed, there are still several different opportunities for volunteers (Read: http://www.gotuasciencecenter.org/contact/volunteering/volunteer-opportunities/ ). The shirts are black with the red, white, and blue UASEDS logo on the front with "Students for the Exploration and Development of Space" spelled out underneath. If you are interested in purchasing a shirt, please email me and let me know what size you will need. We are charging $10 for each shirt (which is pretty much at-cost). We will order the shirts next Wednesday, October 7th and you must pay before we place the order.

If you are not sure of what size to order, we will bring various sizes to the next general meeting.

General Meeting 09/28/09

UASEDS would like to encourage members to take HOV training with the school before Nov 12th, if they can
Members can visit: http://risk.arizona.edu/training/index.shtml for a listing of the available times
Members need to be at least 19 year old and had a license for 3 years
The SpaceVision 2009 speaker list will be posted up
UASEDS members are encouraged to volunteer at SpaceVision for a waver on the admissions
SpaceVision meetings are held in the UASEDS office at noon
At seds.org, people can post up resumes for large space companies to see
Members can also look for scholarships and post images of events at seds.org
Flandrau is looking for more volunteers for their public outreach events
To sign up as a volunteer, go to the Flandrau website
UASEDS will try to arrange a group training session if there is enough interest
There is a UASEDS trip to Kitt Peak on Oct 10th, which we should be able to get a tour of 90 inch telescope
Members are to talk to Kevin if they are interested
Members that are going will need to meet at the SEDS office at 10 am on Oct 10th
If members need to be reimburse for the drive up to BIOSPHERE, please contact Kevin for that information
There will be a Mirror Lab tour after SpaceVision
There is a UASEDS facebook group
Kevin is asking for members to volunteer tonight for a Youth Camp event, which is to show astronomy to under-privileged kids
Members that are interested are to meet near the UASEDS office around 5:30 pm

The possible trips that UASEDS can go on for this semester are Kitt Peak, Oct 10th; Mirror Lab, after SpaceVision; and a possible NASA engineering launch in New Mexico, Oct 17th
UASEDS will going to the Youth Camp on Monday after the UASEDS meeting
UASEDS will try to bring the telescope to the Youth Camp
UASEDS will create a scale model of the telescope for outreach events
Kyle will make the telescope manual by Oct 1

The Biosphere 2 trip will take place this Saturday, Sept 25, at 8 am and will be returning around 2 pm
Dues paying members need to pay $10 for the trip.
Pye Pye gave a presentation about altering images to make them 3D, using the Apollo images as her examples
Kevin gave a presentation about how HIRISE does their 3D imaging
If any members would like to give out presentations at meetings, they would need to talk to Kyle about scheduling it in.
There will be a SpaceVision meeting this Sunday at noon in the SEDS office
