Important Announcements
At our last meeting we heard a great talk by Chris Lewicki, UASEDS alum. We didn't have enough time to go over any SEDS business, so I am going to discuss that information here.
= = = = Telescope Viewing Event = = = =
This Friday, February 27th from 5pm to 9pm, UASEDS will be bringing out our 18" Dobsonian telescope on the mall for an event in coordination with Flandrau Science Center. We will be viewing Venus and the Moon since they will only be about one degree apart (at their closest) that night. If you are interested in helping out, we will plan to meet in the SEDS Office (Sonett 21) at 5pm. Even if you have never helped us out with the telescope before, we encourage you to join us!
= = = = Arizona Rocket Gathering Trip = = = =
This upcoming weekend, UASEDS will be taking a trip to the Arizona Rocket Gathering. This event is held every year by the Arizona High Power Rocketry Association at their launch site a little south of Phoenix ( http://www.ahpra.org/local_launch.html ). Basically, it is a three day event where they are allowed to launch rockets up to an altitude of 100,000 ft. We have been told that Saturday and Sunday will be the days when the larger, experimental rockets are launched. Here is the event's website: http://www.ahpra.org/arg05.htm . Our plan is to head up there Saturday morning (Feb. 28th), camp out at the launch site that night, and head back Sunday (March 1st) when the event ends.
We have decided that this event is free to all dues paying members. If you are interested in going on this trip, please send me an email with answers to the following questions:
(1) If you have a vehicle, would you be willing to help provide transportation up to this event? (You will be reimbursed for gas):
(2) If yes to (1), how many people can your vehicle fit (comfortably)?:
(3) Do you have a tent that you would be willing to use on this trip?:
(4) If yes to (3), how many can this tent hold?:
(5) Do you have any extra camping equipment you would be willing to bring along (i.e. extra sleeping bag, etc.)?:
(6) If yes to (5), please list the items you would be willing to bring:
(7) Do you need camping equipment? (sleeping bag, etc.)?:
(8) If yes to (7), please list the items you will need:
We will need to know if you wish to attend this event ASAP so we can plan accordingly. Please let me know absolutely no later than our general meeting this Thursday (but please still send me an email response).
= = = = New Mexico Trip = = = =
UASEDS is planning a trip to New Mexico from Friday, April 3rd to Sunday, April 5th. The plan is to leave around noon on Friday (Dean's Excuses will be provided if necessary) and drive straight to Socorro, NM where we will stay the night. Saturday morning, we will head to the Trinity Site for an early tour. The Trinity Site is the location where the first atomic bomb was tested and is only open to the public twice a year. After that tour, we will then head to the Very Large Array (VLA) to receive a tour. We are currently trying to get a "better-than-public" tour arranged. From there, we will head back to Socorro, NM for the night. Sunday morning, we will wake up early to get a tour of the VLA control center in Socorro at 10am. From there, we will head to White Sands National Monument to explore the dunes and head back home after that.
What we need from people this week is a definite yes or no if they want to go. You do not need to pay for this trip at this week's meeting. We are estimating that we will charge dues paying members about $25 for this trip (which will include paying for gas there and back, two nights in a hotel, admission for tours, and a few meals). If you wish to go on this trip, please email Kevin, our trip coordinator at kevinkhu at email.arizona.edu . Make sure to let him know if you would be willing to drive as well. Once again for this trip, please let us know by our general meeting this Thursday.
= = = = iPod Raffle = = = =
SEDS is raffling off an iPod! The type of iPod depends on the number of tickets purchased, but it will (at the very least) be an iPod Nano. Two gift cards to the iTunes Store are also up for grabs. Tickets cost $1 each, or 6 tickets for $5. If you are interested in purchasing any tickets, please contact Pye Pye, our treasurer at pye2zaw at email.arizona.edu.
If you have any questions at all, feel free to contact me at (520) 850-7700.
Thanks,
Kyle Stephens
UASEDS President
